Traveling to Italy During Covid

Yes, Italy is open to American and Canadian travelers!

There are a few important things that you need to know though, so please read through this page carefully.

Please note that traveling anywhere during Covid requires flexibility, patience and attention to detail. Even the best-made plans can change due to governments updating regulations.

Our team are here to help. We'll advise you of what you'll need to enter Italy and return home, we'll monitor for any changes, and help out should there be any hiccups while traveling.

Your experience in Italy will be much the same as prior to Covid, of course with the exception of masks and the few remaining restrictions (see below). Thankfully, the fact that there are less tourists overall will make the experience much more enjoyable.

Just about everything is open: museums, archeological sites, shops, restaurants, bars, beaches, pools and more. A proof of health or "green pass" will be required to enter many establishments (see below).

Masks

It is not required to wear a mask outdoors in Italy, although they are still required on any form of public transit and when entering enclosed spaces, such as museums, shops and restaurants (except while eating and drinking). They’re also required at archeological sites, even if they’re outside.

Requirements to Enter Italy

Vaccinated Travelers

Fully vaccinated U.S. and Canadian tourists arriving in Italy will have to show proof of their vaccination and show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours of their arrival. The vaccination record can be presented in paper or digital format.

All travelers must also fill out a Passenger Locator Form.

A negative test result is required for everyone over 6 years old.

Unvaccinated Travelers

Unvaccinated travelers also have to present a negative test, but will have to self-isolate for five days and submit to health monitoring by the local health authorities on arrival to Italy, then take another rapid molecular or antigenic test.

While Traveling Within Italy

"Proof of Health" will be required to take part in most things travelers love — including going to restaurants, museums, bars, spas, pools, gelato shops, gyms, concerts, sporting events and long distance train travel.

In lieu of having an Italian green pass, American and Canadian travelers should carry around their proof of vaccine, covid test results or proof of recent recovery from covid and have them ready to present throughout their visit to Italy.

Those who aren’t vaccinated will have to keep getting coronavirus tests every 48 hours of their trip to meet the green-passport requirements. Antigen tests are readily available for easy testing.

Returning Home

Both American and Canadian travelers are required to present a Covid test when returning home, regardless of your vaccination status, although the specific requirements differ for each country.

Covid tests are very easy to find, and the prices are capped to keep them affordable. Rapid tests should cost about 22 EUR and PCR tests about 60 EUR. We can help you make an appointment with a convenient location before you leave.

Americans Returning to the USA

Before boarding a flight to the United States, you are required to show one of the following:

  • If you are fully vaccinated: Proof of vaccination and a negative COVID-19 test     result taken no more than 3 days before travel.
  • If you are NOT fully vaccinated: A negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than 1 day before travel.

This can be either an Antigen or PCR Covid test.

Children under 2 years old do not need to test. There is also an option for people who have documented recovery from COVID-19 in the past 90 days.

Canadians Returning to Canada

All travellers 5 years of age or older, regardless of citizenship or vaccination status, must:

  • provide proof of a COVID-19 negative molecular test result taken within 72 hours of your scheduled flight, or arrival at a land border crossing to enter Canada OR
  • proof of a previous positive test result taken between 14 and 180 days before arrival.

Canada does not accept Antigen tests for entry.
